OUR STORY
Started by an installer who got tired of fixing hurried installs
Paul Mercer came to Johnson County from Topeka in his twenties, on an install crew, and spent eleven years putting garage doors into the new subdivisions of south Overland Park, Lenexa, and Olathe for one of the big regional door companies. He was good at it, and the company was not bad. But the warranty callbacks kept landing on his route: doors a year or two old, already failing, and almost never because the door was at fault. The springs were a size light because the right set had not been on the truck. Hardware was rushed. The schedule beat the workmanship, and the homeowner met the bill later.
In 2021 Paul and his wife Carla started Metcalf Garage Door out of their own garage near 159th and Metcalf, in old Stanley, with a used box truck and a short list of things they would do differently. Repair only; new construction is somebody else's game. One county for a map. And one habit above all: every repair starts from the part that actually failed, because a person who understands the diagnosis does not have to take the repair on faith.
Carla runs the office, which mostly means she IS the office: the phone, the schedule, the callback. Marcus Bell apprenticed under Paul at the old shop and followed him in 2023, and he runs the second truck. Nobody was hired off a job board. If you have seen a big-company truck in this county, you have some idea whose doors Paul used to hang. He would rather fix yours.
The business is named for the street Johnson County counts from: Metcalf Avenue, the old US-69, running from Kansas City, Kansas down through Downtown Overland Park to Stilwell. One road, one county, known well. That is the company.
What we run on
The failed part tells the story
The failed part named, the price out loud, the diagnosis in plain words. A homeowner who understands what failed can judge the bill, and a company that names its failures plainly does better work. We think the habit matters more than the slogan would.
Family name, family phone
When you call Metcalf Garage Door, a Mercer answers, or Marcus does. The person who books your job is the person who calls you back about it, and if you ring next season with a question, you will reach someone who remembers your door. Big companies buy that feeling with hold music. Ours is just small.
One county, known well
Metcalf runs Johnson County only, plus the Wyandotte river towns at its north end. The 1950s ranches of the Shawnee Mission edge, the growth decades down the corridor, the estate doors of Mission Hills, the acreage doors of Stilwell: that is the whole territory, and knowing it street by street is worth more than a metro-wide map and a stranger on your driveway.
The door you have comes first
Repair is the trade, and replacement is what happens when a door's sections or an opener's parts are simply gone. If your door can be fixed honestly, it will be, and if it cannot, you will hear why from someone whose living does not depend on selling you a new one. We do not install new construction at all. Keeping yours working is the entire business.
